Maryland mom shares how subsidy program helped her family recover after serious crash

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md ( DC News Now ) — As a new report signals the significant cost of child care in D.C. as the highest in the country, one Maryland mother of three hopes other parents learn about government programs to subsidize child care.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation says Maryland’s average annual cost of child care is $11,000 -roughly the same in Virginia — and a soaring $24,000 in the District.

“Some counties have a lot more resources available to them,” Heather Bell told DC News Now.

Bell was involved in a major crash nearly 14 years ago which forced her out of work due to her injuries.

“I knew life afterwards might not look the same, and it was going to be along road to recovery, Bell said.

Maryland’s Child Care Scholarship Program helped cover costs to care for her kids for four years, while she underwent several surgeries.

“My daughter was three and my son was 4-months-old,” she said. “Whether you’re a young mom or not, we all have things that we need to learn when it comes to not just how to make money or management, but how it works.”
