‘This fog’s so dense, people don’t pay attention, and that causes a lot of these problems’
Crashes involving 43 vehicles on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay Bridge sent 13 people to the hospital and left hundreds of travelers stranded on Saturday morning.
The incident began around 8 a.m. when an initial crash in the westbound lane prompted a chain reaction that eventually involved 23 vehicles. There were also an estimated 20 secondary crashes, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) Police .
“Two patients were transported to local hospitals with serious injuries ,” the MDTA police said in a statement. “Eleven additional patients were also transported to local hospitals. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.”
All three of the bridge’s westbound lanes were closed to traffic for six hours. During this period, traffic alternated between the two eastbound lanes.
An estimated 72,000 vehicles cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge daily, according to statistics from the state of Maryland.
