WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Start the clock: taxpayers now have less than three months to gather tax documents and file personal income tax returns.
One D.C. mom told DC News Now that credits previously unknown to her put thousands of dollars into her wallet.
Chantel Johnson, a Northwest mother of three, says she couldn’t believe the size of her tax refund after filing in 2020, all the while working almost full-time as a bank teller.
“I honestly thought it was a mistake at first,” Johnson said Monday. She got “about $10,000 in total,” and said she “was able to pay off debt and purchase my vehicle,” after her existing car was totaled.

Johnson said the Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) available to her helped immeasurably when she faced financial burdens.
At the DC Office of Tax and Revenue , Taxpayer Advocate Paul Smith shared how the District’s EITC , coupled with the US Treasury’s own EITC can provide relatively high refunds.
