Maryland ‘Meals on Wheels’ in need of delivery drivers

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Meals on Wheels Takoma Park/Silver Spring said that there is a growing demand for their services in the area, but they need more delivery drivers to expand.

Volunteers with the organization deliver meals to homebound neighbors every day.

“We serve two meals a day. Monday through Friday, to our homebound neighbors, regardless of age or income level,” said Courtney Gardner.

Gardner said that the organization has served more people each year since the pandemic.

“Last year, we had 55,642. The year before that, 52,443; and in 2021, 49,744,” she said.

She said the rise in demand is due to factors like inflation and COVID. Now, they want to expand to 13 total routes, but first, they need more drivers.

“We right now have 11 routes, so that’s 55 drivers a week. So ideally, we’d like to have six or seven more drivers,” Garner said.
