DC porch pirate arrested after falling for MPD’s package theft decoy

WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) arrested a man after conducting a operation meant to target package thieves.

On Jan. 31, MPD created two decoy packaged, each fitted with an AirTag, and put them on the steps of a private home in the the 1500 block of Gales St. in Northeast D.C. Both packages had shipping labels and markings of a popular e-commerce company and were addressed to MPD’s Fifth District Commander.

Then, at around 1:30 p.m., a man went onto the private property, took both packages and left.

MPD officers tracked the packages using the AirTags and then arrested Gregory Fogle, 59, of Southeast, D.C., for Theft II.
