Man, officer identified in fatal police shooting in Prince George’s County

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — The Maryland Office Attorney General has identified the police officer and the man involved in the fatal police shooting that happened on Feb. 1 in Suitland.

The man who was shot and killed was identified as 31-year-old Melvin Jay.

The officer who discharged the weapon was identified as Prince George’s County Police Officer Braxton Shelton. He has four years of law enforcement experience and is assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.

“It’s very unfortunate, very unfortunate situation that we have another black person who is in their home, doing nothing wrong and is murdered by the police,” said Qiana Johnson, co-founder of Harriet’s Wildest Dreams.

A candlelight vigil was held on Sunday to remember Melvin.

“It was just so much love poured out for Melvin and you could just tell by the crowd that he was deeply loved and going to be deeply missed,” Johnson said.
