WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Neighbors living in Navy Yard said thieves are increasingly targeting cars parked in secure parking garages.
“Just in our building alone there were three or four SUVs stolen right out of there. It’s gated, it’s a nice area so it’s shocking this is happening,” said Whitney Van Burke, who lives at the 10K Hills South apartment complex in Navy Yard.
Van Burke said her apartment complex emailed residents notifying them of the recent crime, but, it still worries her.

“It’s not just our apartment, it’s happening all the time. People are being attacked in the streets during the day, it’s not just at night,” she said.
According to D.C. police data, 500 cars have been stolen so far this year. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) does not categorize where the cars are being stolen from, so it’s unclear how many were taken from garages. But, a recent police report shows a white Hyundai was stolen from the Parc Riverside Apartments parking garage this week.
