DC restaurant prefers people over 30 years old; some residents question legality

WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — A D.C. restaurant and hookah bar is telling some patrons they prefer to serve a more mature audience, as a means to respond to complaints of recent crime involving young people.

Along a busy 8th Street commercial corridor in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, the general manager of Cafe 8 Mediterranean Eatery admits that staff would prefer customers over the age of 30.

“We have certain instances where we have to call 911, and we just want to do our part as much … as we can,” General Manager Christopher Wright told DC News Now on Wednesday.

“We took it upon us to say, you know what, we will push for an older or mature crowd,” he added.

While Wright says security outside the restaurant will tell young patrons they prefer people be at least 30 years old, service will not be denied.

The preference being shared with potential customers is not sitting easily with several local residents, however.
