According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, Javier Reyes, 23, of Silver Spring was sentenced to 50 years in prison suspending all but 30 to serve and five years of supervised probation upon release. Reyes was convicted by a jury in December on charges of second-degree felony murder and use of a handgun in a crime of violence for the death of 20-year-old Walter Woods of Takoma Park.
This stems from a shooting on Hampshire Green Lane in Silver Spring on March 7, 2023. An investigation by Montgomery County Police determined the defendant and victim met at a neighborhood park to conduct a drug deal. Officers responding to a 911 call for the sound of gunshots fired, found Woods lying in the playground area unresponsive. Woods was suffering from four gunshot wounds.
