Redistricting in Alexandria: A closer look at neighborhood schools

This is the second story in a series on Alexandria City Public Schools’ redistricting efforts for its elementary and middle schools. Stories on racial and socioeconomic diversity in schools and the policy changes will run in subsequent issues of the Times leading up to a scheduled School Board vote on June 12.

For many people who’ve settled in Alexandria, the location of their home in relation to an elementary school is a top priority. Now, some parents of Alexandria City Public Schools students are reckoning with potential changes to that home and school relationship.

“We live less than two blocks away from [Naomi L.] Brooks [Elementary School], and … very much consider our home and our family a part of that Brooks community. … [One plan would] now send our children to George Mason [Elementary School], which means that our kids would no longer be able to walk to school, but now have to ride a bus,” Alexander Hume, an ACPS parent, said at the Monday School Board public hearing…
