18 people arrested in Navy Yard on the Fourth of July, police say

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Sixteen teenagers and two adults were arrested in the Navy Yard area on the Fourth of July, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

MPD says officers received multiple calls about disorderly behavior, including the use of illegal fireworks. Police note that most incidents occurred near First and M Street, SE.

MPD provided a breakdown of the reasons for arrests:

  • 15 arrests for fireworks-related charges
  • 1 arrest for carrying a pistol without a license (a weapon was recovered)
  • 1 arrest for simple assault
  • 1 arrest for public consumption of marijuana

Police say two teenagers were also arrested for violating curfew and were later released to their parents.

MPD states the following fireworks were seized:

  • 151 Roman candles
  • 39 mini firecrackers
  • 9 Fireworks Rockets
  • 6 Firecrackers
  • 6 packs of Bang Snaps
  • 7 additional packs of miscellaneous fireworks

Police emphasize that all fireworks that launch and explode are illegal in the District, and there will be an increased police presence in the Navy Yard community…
