Prince George’s Seniors In District 8 Can Apply Now For Housing And Utility Relief

FORT WASHINGTON, Md. — Senior residents in Prince George’s County District 8 — including neighborhoods like Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs and Fort Washington — can now apply for financial assistance through the District 8 Senior Support Fund, a $5 million program designed to support longtime residents facing rising costs.

Funded by MGM National Harbor’s Local Impact Grant, the senior relief program is part of a broader $9.7 million annual investment plan introduced by County Council Chair Edward P. Burroughs III to restore the original intent of casino revenue — supporting housing stability, health equity, youth employment, veteran services and more. The program helps eligible seniors cover essential household costs such as:

  • Lawn cutting services (Note: grass cutting only, not full lawn care)
  • Mortgage payment assistance
  • Rental assistance
  • Utility assistance (electric, gas, water)
  • Property tax assistance

“We’ve done our best to craft a plan that lives up to what MGM and the county government promised District 8 residents when the casino was built. It’s my goal to restore the integrity of what was said when this casino fund was created, because we’ve gotten away from that,” said Vice Chair Burroughs. “This plan invests in initiatives that uplift residents and provides meaningful opportunities in District 8.”

Assistance awards range from $550 to more than $2,000, depending on individual need and documentation. The program has the capacity to benefit up to 3,000 local seniors. The deadline to apply is Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025…
