Man murders bystander who defended young mother from assault in DC

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The heroic act by one man to defend a young mother as she was being assaulted resulted in his murder. Now, his killer has been held accountable.

In the early morning hours of Aug. 22, 2023, 32-year-old Marcus Thurman witnessed a fight between Stephen Herring, 26, and a woman. The fight became physical, with Herring assaulting the woman as her baby was nearby in a stroller.

Thurman came to the young woman’s defense, chasing her assailant off. The relief was short-lived as Herring, enraged by the intervention, had returned with a knife.
