D.C. Councilmember Anita Bonds might not run for reelection in a key citywide race

D.C. Councilmember Anita Bonds may not run for reelection next year, shaking up an important citywide race and bringing the career of one of the city’s longest tenured politicians to a close.

Bonds has discussed the possibility with allies in recent days, according to several sources familiar with the talks. She’s considering endorsing one of her council aides for her at-large seat: Kevin Chavous, son of the longtime Ward 7 councilmember of the same name.

These sources say Bonds has been hesitant about pursuing a re-election bid in next year’s Democratic primary for some time, owing in no small part to her age. Bonds is 80 years old, so she’d be in her mid-80s if she were to win and serve another term…
