DC police to patrol District alongside National Guard: MPD

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said Friday that officers would assist the National Guard in patrolling the District, following the shooting of two guardsmen Wednesday.

“MPD is working with our law enforcement partners to best support National Guard Members on assignment in Washington, DC”, said an MPD in a statement sent to DC News Now.

According to a report by The Washington Post, the move would redirect officers from tasks in neighborhoods so they can accompany guardsmen; however, the order is subject to change.

Two West Virginia National Guard members, Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, were shot while patrolling the city as part of the “Safe and Beautiful Task Force.” Beckstrom died from her injuries on Thursday. As of Friday, Wolfe remained in the hospital for treatment of critical injuries.
