WINTER ALERT: Wintry mix and snow likely Tuesday morning

WASHINGTON (7News) — December is starting where November ended, with below-average temperatures. Our next weather maker will tap into those cold temperatures and bring a chance of wintry mix and snow on Tuesday morning.

The First Alert Weather Team is on WINTER ALERT for Tuesday morning as a wintry mix and snow are looking likely along and west of I-95.

Temperatures will hover near — to slightly below — freezing as a plume of moisture arrives from the southwest between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m.

The freezing line looks to set up right along I-95, which is where a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and rain will fall. Areas farther west will likely see all snow, while areas south and east will likely only see a cold rain.

Accumulation of snow or ice does not appear likely for the D.C. metro, but reduced visibilities, coupled with slushy road conditions, will make for dangerous driving.

Areas north and west of D.C. could see snow accumulations — anywhere between 1 and 3 inches — before melting after sunrise as temperatures gradually warm to near 40 degrees.

The primary concern with this weather maker will be the timing of the wintry weather during Tuesday morning’s commute. If possible, stay off the roads until Tuesday afternoon when temperatures warm to the 40s, and the rain tapers off by late afternoon…
