On World AIDS Day, observed on December 1, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the DC Department of Health (DC Health) are highlighting the need for accessible HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment in Washington, DC. The day focuses on the importance of HIV testing, prevention, treatment, and community support. Dr. Ayanna Bennett, Director of DC Health, said early care and education help reduce new HIV cases and improve health for people living with HIV.
DC Health offers free and confidential services to support sexual health. Key resources include Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), which must be started within 72 hours after possible HIV exposure, and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), a daily pill to help prevent HIV infection. The PEP hotline, started in 2021, provides 24/7 support. The TelePrEP program allows residents to access PrEP online at no cost.
Other resources on sexualbeing.org include free condom delivery, at-home HIV test kits, the Positive Voices Podcast, and safe LGBTQ housing at SMYAL.
