DC juvenile detention center overcrowded, raising safety and education concern

WASHINGTON (7News) — A growing crisis is unfolding at the D.C. Youth Services Center, the city’s primary juvenile detention facility.

Built to house 98 young people, the center is now holding 124, prompting concerns from lawmakers, advocates, and families about safety, education, and living conditions.

The overcrowding comes as the D.C. Council recently voted to extend the city’s youth curfew, a measure officials say aims to keep teens safer on the streets. But critics warn that measures outside the detention center do little to address the strain within its walls…
