Cold alert in place, where to go to stay warm

WASHINGTON — Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a Cold Alert for D.C. from 8 p.m. Sunday through 9 a.m. Monday.

That means overnight temperatures will feel like 20 degrees or colder. Hypothermia shelters will be open around the District, generally from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Key Resources for Residents

  • Shelter Hotline: If you or someone you know needs shelter, call the Shelter Hotline at 202-399-7093 or dial 311 for free, accessible transportation to a warm location. In a medical emergency, call 911 first.
  • D.C. Services: The D.C. government increases shelter capacity to over 1,300 beds and offers free outreach, welfare checks, warm clothing and transportation to shelters available 24 hours a day between November and March, according to cold.dc.gov.
  • AlertDC Notifications: Sign up for AlertDC to get notifications about cold weather advisories and emergencies. It’ll let you know when there are both Cold and Extreme Cold Alerts, depending on forecasted temperatures and wind chill.
