WASHINGTON — Hundreds of workers will be paid for overtime and benefits they were wrongfully denied by a D.C. construction company, Attorney General Brian Schwalb announced Tuesday.
Brothers Mechanical Inc., which works on large developments in NoMa, Navy Yard, and elsewhere throughout the District, along with subcontractors, allegedly misclassified workers as independent contractors in order to deny them overtime premiums, paid sick leave, unemployment insurance, and workers’ compensation, and to avoid additional taxes, an Office of the Attorney General investigation found. About 500 employees have been affected since 2020, the OAG said.
