Get Out There: Ice skating around the D.C. region

The holidays are just around the corner and the D.C. region has already seen its first snowfall. This makes it the perfect time to lace up a pair of ice skates and glide (or waddle) your day away at a local ice skating rink. So this week for Get Out There, our weekly conversation about ways to explore the Washington region, we’re helping you get out on the ice.

One classic option in D.C. is the outdoor ice rink at the National Gallery of Art. Every winter, the museum erects a rink in the sculpture garden and opens it up to the public. This season, The National Gallery is also partnering up with the Washington Elite Skating School to offer skating lessons for adults and children. Those classes take place on Saturday mornings while the rink remains open.

Another exciting skating opportunity has now reopened in Ward 7. Last week, after years of renovations, the historic Fort Dupont Ice Arena opened its doors. The Arena has a long history in the city: it’s the home of the Fort Dupont Cannons, a historically Black hockey team…
