DC faces widespread turnover, new voting system in 2026

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The nation’s capital is on the cusp of a significant leadership shift, with changes coming at nearly every level of city government.

Mayor Muriel Bowser’s announcement this week of an interim police chief comes as the city prepares for widespread turnover inside City Hall in 2026.

Bowser has already said she will not seek reelection, several longtime councilmembers are stepping aside, and voters will soon face a new way of casting ballots for city leadership.

Jeff Carroll was named interim chief of the Metropolitan Police Department on Wednesday, replacing outgoing Chief Pamela Smith. When a permanent successor is eventually chosen, that person will become the fourth full-time police chief in less than a decade.
