Traffic fatalities in DC drop more than 50% in 2025, Attorney General says

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Traffic fatalities in Washington, D.C. have dropped by more than 50% in 2025, according to the D.C. Office of the Attorney General, which credits the decline in part to the STEER Act, a law aimed at holding dangerous drivers accountable.

The announcement marks a significant shift for a city that has long struggled with deadly crashes. Traffic safety advocates said the law is one of several tools helping reduce fatalities and believe continued efforts could eventually bring that number to zero.

“Common-sense law gets the worst speeders off the road. And we did. I mean, they did it. I’m really pleased to hear this news,” Dan Langenkamp said.
