Deadly DC crash highlights ongoing pedestrian safety concerns

WASHINGTON (7News) — A deadly crash in Northwest Washington is raising urgent questions about road safety — even as new data shows traffic deaths in the D.C. region are finally declining.

The collision occurred at the intersection of 16th and L Streets NW, which is now back open, though the impact of the crash is still being felt by the community.

Police say four vehicles collided, and a pedestrian was killed. Three others were seriously injured, and a bike was also involved. Authorities said the driver of the speeding vehicle attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended shortly after.

This tragedy comes as new statistics show that traffic deaths in the D.C. region have fallen to pre-pandemic levels. There were 25 total traffic fatalities last year, down from 52 the year before.
