TAKOMA PARK, Md. (7News) — As power outages become increasingly likely with this weekend’s storms ahead, the Takoma Park Police Department has issued a comprehensive guide to help residents prepare for both short-term and long-term power disruptions. The guide emphasizes the importance of having essential supplies on hand to ensure safety and comfort during outages.
For short-term power outages, which typically last less than 12 hours, the police recommend assembling a kit that includes:
- At least one gallon of water per person per day, and enough water for pets.
- Ready-to-eat foods, such as canned goods and shelf-stable snacks, and refrigerated items remain safe for only four hours without power.
- A three-day supply of any necessary medications.
For long-term outages, lasting more than 12 hours, the guide advises:
- Stocking two weeks’ worth of food and water.
- Coolers filled with ice to help preserve perishable items. A digital thermometer can be used to check the safety of refrigerated food.
- Extra batteries are essential for flashlights and other devices.
For cooking, an outdoor charcoal grill or camp stove can be used.
To keep electronic devices charged, power banks and car chargers are suggested. The guide suggests keeping a high-quality flashlight for each family member, along with battery-powered lanterns and headlamps. Cash in small bills is recommended, as electronic payment systems may be unavailable…
