$655k awarded for Deon Kay’s family in jeopardy after OAG appeal

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Jurors awarded the family of Deon Kay $655,000 last July after he was shot and killed by a D.C. police officer in 2020. That money is now in jeopardy.

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) seeks a new trial for Officer Alexander Alvarez, and the jury award is tossed.

“I think we’re just going to have to keep fighting for the family,” said Kenai Kay, who attended Tuesday’s hearing at DC Superior Court regarding her brother. “Even though it’s not what everybody want or what we want is just the respect for the family.”

Kay was shot on Sept. 2, 2020, in Southeast during a police investigation. The officer is said to have fired their weapon after the 18-year-old ran from a car with a gun in his hand. While running from the area, officials said Kay tossed the gun, which was located nearly 100 feet from where he was shot, according to the attorney’s office…
