Investigators identify man who died after release from county police custody

Seven Montgomery County police officers and a man who died after being released from their custody have been identified by the Independent Investigations Division in the state Office of the Attorney General more than a month after the incident occurred.

In a Friday press release, the investigations division identified the man who died as Jamal Thompson, 31, of Silver Spring. County police officers took Thompson into custody on Dec. 15. He was taken to a local hospital where he had a “medical crisis” and later died, according to the release.

Police took Thompson into custody on Dec. 15 while responding to a 911 call around 8:30 p.m. about a person experiencing a “mental episode,” Bethesda Today previously reported based on a December press release from the state Office of the Attorney General. That release said the person died in a local hospital on Dec. 22, but did not say where the initial incident took place…
