Chevy Chase townhome fire caused by chimney failure while fireplace was in use

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (7News) — Seven adults, two children and two pets were displaced after a fire erupted at a townhome Sunday in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

The fire started in the attic and was found to be accidental. It was caused by a blockage and failure of the chimney piping, which ignited the wooden rafters and ceiling joists while the fireplace was in use.

Firefighters responded to the scene on Hillandale Road and successfully rescued a cat from the blaze. The family of nine was able to escape in time thanks to smoke alarms…
