DC transitions to manual trash pickup due to icy alleys

WASHINGTON — The District’s Department of Public Works (DPW) is trying out manual trash pickup due to the icy conditions in alleyways that continue complicating garbage collection after one of the longest periods of frigid temperatures in the region’s history.

Mayor Muriel Bowser and members of her team provided an operations update on Monday as the city continues to recover from the winter storm more than one week later.

On Monday, DPW resumed the normal collection schedule for both frontside and alley collections. However, DPW Interim Director Anthony Crispino says his team is opting to do manual trash and recycling pickup because alleys remain icy. “Because we have never attempted this before, we are working as hard as we can. So if you’re not on a Monday route, you are encouraged to put your trash in the alleyway as best you can. The crews will come through, we will get there,” Crispino added…
