Hit‑and‑run crash in Northwest DC kills man, injures juvenile on Segway

WASHINGTON — A man is dead and a juvenile is recovering from serious injuries after the electric scooter they were riding was struck in a hit-and-run crash in Northwest D.C.

Metropolitan Police Officers were called to the 5400 block of Colorado Avenue for a report of a crash shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday. When police got to the scene they found the wreckage of a gold 2005 Mercedes-Benz and an electric Segway scooter in the street. Police say a man and a 14-year-old boy were found with serious injuries at the crash site. DC Fire and EMS transported the juvenile to a local hospital for treatment of critical injuries. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Both were riding the Segway at the time of the crash, police said.

MPD detectives have found that the Mercedes was traveling northbound on 14th Street, Northwest, when it ran a red light at the Colorado Avenue intersection. The driver of the Mercedes then made a left turn onto Colorado Avenue. at the same time the scooter was traveling south toward the same intersection. The scooter also ran the red light, where the Mercedes struck the scooter at the intersection, causing the man and the teen to be thrown from the scooter. The driver of the Mercedes drove a short distance from the scene on Colorado Avenue, then stopped the vehicle and fled on foot with a passenger, police said…
