DC Council unanimously passes emergency bills on MPD transparency amid federal surge

WASHINGTON (7News) — D.C. Councilmembers unanimously passed two emergency measures Tuesday regarding accountability amid the federal law enforcement surge.

One of the bills, introduced by Councilmember Brooke Pinto (D – Ward 2) and co-introduced by Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, would require MPD body-camera footage be released publicly when officers are present for serious or deadly use of force by other law enforcement agencies, including federal agencies.

“We cannot control everything that the federal government does, but we can demand that there be transparency and accountability for what happens in our communities that’s captured with our body-worn cameras,” Pinto said ahead of the legislative meeting…
