Man fatally shot by police identified

WASHINGTON — The man fatally shot by police on Thursday has been identified.

James Lewis Jr., 32, of Sandy Springs, Georgia, was identified as the decedent on Monday by the Independent Investigations Division. The officer involved has been identified as Lieutenant Charles Cooper, assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.

According to police, on Thursday, Cooper and another officer pulled Lewis Jr. over near 23rd Avenue and Ager Street just after 8:30 p.m. During the traffic stop, the officers asked Lewis Jr. to step out of the car and sit on the curb as police searched his vehicle…
