DMV Doers | Ex-inmate aids others in post-prison transition by leading Georgetown initiative

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Tyrone Walker is the Director of Reentry Services at the Prisons and Justice Initiative at Georgetown University.  He provides support for current and formerly incarcerated men and women.  A main focus is on addressing their reentry needs before and after their release.

Walker knows the challenges of the people who are in the program. He spent nearly 25 years behind bars, and he says the transition was difficult for him.

“I had a guy sitting next to me, and he looked at me and said that I was going through a sensory overload,” said Walker. “He said, just think about it, we are just coming home, and you are going to have headaches, and that was the lesson that helped me decide to help others.”

Walker is involved in several programs that help provide a strong foundation for those getting acclimated to life outside of prison.  He also works with attorneys who are helping their clients plan for reentry.  He says the long hours and the hard work pay off…
