Fourth of July heat wave pushes heat index above 100 across eastern U.S.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A prolonged and dangerous heat wave is expected to continue through the Fourth of July weekend, bringing oppressive temperatures and high humidity to much of the Midwest, Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley, Mid-South and East Coast.

The combination of air temperatures in the mid-90s to around 105 degrees and high humidity will produce heat index values ranging from 100 to 115 degrees in many areas. The conditions are expected to create widespread major to extreme heat risk through the holiday weekend.

The highest heat risk stretches from parts of the Midwest through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, where the Weather Prediction Center forecasts extreme heat impacts both Saturday and continuing into Independence Day and Sunday…
