JUPITER, Fla. (CBS12) — Five Palm Beach County Fire Rescue firefighters are back home after an eight-day deployment to Venezuela, where members of Florida Task Force 2 helped with search-and-rescue efforts following deadly earthquakes that left people trapped beneath rubble.
The firefighters spoke Wednesday at Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Station 19 in Jupiter about their work in Venezuela, including their role in the internationally reported rescue of a security guard who survived eight days beneath the rubble in La Guaira.
The man, identified in international reports as 43-year-old Hernán Alberto Gil Flores, was pulled alive from the basement of the collapsed Galerías Playa Grande shopping center in Catia La Mar, in La Guaira state, after a complex multinational rescue operation…
