WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — South Florida is facing another day of dangerous heat, with Saharan dust helping keep skies drier and limiting the cooling thunderstorms that typically provide some afternoon relief.
A Heat Advisory is in effect for all of South Florida from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Afternoon temperatures will climb into the low to mid-90s across the metro areas and the mid to upper 90s inland. A few locations in the Everglades could even approach 100 degrees.
Humidity will make it feel even hotter. Heat index values—the temperature it feels like when humidity is included—are expected to reach 105 to 110 degrees this afternoon. Anyone spending extended time outdoors should drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade and limit strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
Saharan dust, a layer of hot, dry and dusty air that travels across the Atlantic from Africa, will help suppress the usual summertime thunderstorms today. Most of South Florida will stay dry, with only a small chance for late-day showers or storms around Lake Okeechobee and interior areas.
The combination of strong high pressure and Saharan dust will keep the heat going into Monday.
