Armed man who detained teen during ding-dong ditch prank sues PBSO for ‘wrongful arrest’

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. — A West Boca man filed a federal lawsuit against the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, claiming he was wrongfully arrested last year after he, while holding a gun, detained a 14-year-old boy who tried a ding-dong ditch prank at his home.

Just before 8 p.m. Oct. 16, 2025, Santiago Cairo, 41, left his home in the 6300 block of Boca Circle to walk his two dogs. While Cairo was out, three teenage boys came to his front door. Two of the boys banged on his door while one stood in the dark front yard nearby. After the two knocked, they all ran away, home surveillance cameras Cairo posted publicly on YouTube this week show. The teens’ faces are blurred in the video.

About two minutes later, Cairo’s cameras showed one of the boys, wearing dark clothes and a hoodie concealing his face, walk from the backyard to Cairo’s front door with what appeared to be a flashlight in his hand. The boy appeared to lean toward Cairo’s front door. At that moment, Cairo returned to his home and saw him, the video showed…
