Expectations exceeded at evening to benefit charter schools in westernmost communities

After two decades, the Night of Expectations is still surpassing well, expectations.

The event, Emilia Fanjul’s fundraiser for the education of children in the county’s western communities, took place Jan. 12 at Café Boulud.

The cool-but-not-chilly evening began in the courtyard with cocktails around the fountain and a preview of the live auction items.

From the courtyard, guests moved inside where the tables were draped with champagne- and platinum-colored cloths and each lady’s place was set with a Stubbs & Wooton “pocket” designed by Percy Steinhart, who promised it would “go with everything.”

It sure went fine with all that champers, yes sirree.

After a dinner of cauliflower soup with pickled mustard seeds, beef tenderloin and either key lime-grapefruit sorbet or a chocolate tart, guests heard from a high school student student who spoke about his experiences at Everglades Preparatory Academy.

After a live auction conducted by Tom Quick, the night continued with dancing, dancing and more dancing.
