ArtiGras cancels last day of festival, citing weather

PALM BEACH GARDENS — Citing the threat of severe weather today, organizers of the ArtiGras festival canceled the final day of the popular event.

“We have determined that this is in the best interest of public safety and the safety of our artists,” organizers said in a message posted on the festival’s webpage at artigras.org.

The National Weather Service predicts a wet and windy day today as a low-pressure system moves across the Florida peninsula. “The majority of rainfall will come from showers, although there could be some embedded thunderstorms as well,” the agency said in a news release early this morning.

Anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of rain is expected today across most of South Florida this evening, “with locally higher amounts possible,” the Weather Service said, adding that localized flooding is possible with the system.

After the front moves through, temperatures will fall, with a low of 58 predicted tonight, and a high of 68 on Monday morning.

ArtiGras marked its 39 th anniversary this weekend, with tens of thousands of people visiting what began in the early 1980s as a small local art show. ArtiGras was being held at the North County District Park in Palm Beach Gardens, and featured about 300 artists, a youth art competition, live entertainment and a Sunday brunch extravaganza.
