Bicyclist struck and killed by hit-and-run driver in suburban West Palm

WEST PALM BEACH — A female riding a bicycle was struck and killed late Friday by a speeding driver who fled the scene, police said Sunday.

The unidentified female, who was not further identified as to age or hometown, was riding a Schwinn bicycle north in the western crosswalk at Okeechobee Boulevard and Haverhill Road in suburban West Palm Beach at about 11:54 p.m. Friday when she was struck by a car traveling eastbound on Okeechobee at a high rate of speed, Palm Beach County sheriff’s officials said in a report.

The car, identified as a 2007 or 2008 black Hyundai Tiburon, hit the left side of the bicycle, sending it onto the pavement, where rider and bicycle then slid to the northeast, deputies said. The Tiburon fled the crash scene at a speed of about 96 mph in the 45-mph zone.

News reports said the car had been located and two people detained, but that could not be confirmed this morning.
