After experiencing sudden and significant weight loss in the fall of 2023, Palm Beach resident Tim Moran initially feared he’d developed cancer.
But testing revealed that the Palm Beach Police and Fire Foundation co-founder and vice chairman had serious liver disease and would require a lifesaving transplant.
“I went to see a doctor initially to see what was going on,” said Moran, who lost more than 60 pounds over several months despite eating normally and feeling ‘OK.’ “I actually thought I had cancer or something, because how could you lose that much weight that fast? Happily, that was not the case. The diagnosis that I had was it was an issue with my liver and kidneys. I was trying to wrap my head around it.”
Doctors determined that his kidney issues were not life-threatening, Moran said, but his liver issues were.
Diagnosed with cirrhosis and steatohepatitis, a type of fatty liver disease, Moran, 60, was placed on a liver transplant list. Immediately, he began researching transplant options and trying to find where to get the best possible care.
