WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Potentially triple-digit temps and packed streets, West Palm Beach braces for heat and massive downtown protests on Saturday.
The West Palm Beach Police Department has issued a traffic and heat advisory for June 14, as large demonstrations are expected to cause significant traffic delays in the downtown area. Several roadways may experience heavier-than-normal traffic, and residents and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, consider alternate routes, and allow extra travel time.
In addition to traffic concerns, temperatures are forecasted to reach the mid-to-high 90s. Participants in the demonstrations are urged to take precautions to avoid heat exhaustion, which can occur quickly in such conditions, according to the WPBPD news release.
To stay safe in the heat, the police department advises:
- Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day—don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
- Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a hat. Apply sunscreen regularly and seek shade when possible.
- Limit strenuous activity, especially during peak sun hours — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The department also highlighted the signs of heat exhaustion, which include dizziness or light-headedness, excessive sweating, nausea or vomiting, headache, weakness or fatigue, and cool, clammy skin…
