Residents being swindled in frightening jury duty scam on the rise in Palm Beach County

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) — A frightening phone scam targeting residents with threats of jail time over missed jury duty is making rounds in Palm Beach County.

For West Palm Beach resident Claudia Kirk Barto the scam came in the form of a phone call from a local number. She said she answered the call which looked like it was coming from Boca Raton and on the other end was a man claiming to be Sergeant Mark Garrison with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

“It sounded very legit, like I’m from the sheriffs office and you have a failure to appear from this grand jury summons,” Barto said. “I’m like grand jury summons I’ve never gotten a grand jury summons I’m not sure what you’re talking about but in my head I’m going well I do get a lot of mail…
