Fernand remains poorly organized and monitoring a tropical wave near Windward Islands

West Palm Beach, FLA. (WPEC) — Tropical Storm Fernand has organizes more with the latest update from the National Hurricane center. A fragmented outer band—a loosely formed ring of storms—extends into the northern half of the storm and is wrapping around as of the latest satellite check. Satellite estimates place Fernand’s maximum sustained winds between 40 and 50 mph, and the official intensity is 40 mph.

Fernand is currently moving north-northeast at 15 mph, steered by the subtropical ridge—a large area of high pressure in the Atlantic.

Over the next couple of days, Fernand will curve more northeastward and speed up as it enters the mid-latitude westerlies, a band of fast-moving winds that often guide storms away from the tropics.
