Local mom sounds alarm on the hidden cost of raising high-achieving kids

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — In an era of rising expenses, local mom and author Audrey Borden is exploring ways to cut costs for parents in her upcoming book.

Borden, who began her journey over 20 years ago by enrolling her daughters in dance classes, found herself immersed in a costly lifestyle of competitions, private lessons, and custom costumes. Her research reveals that parents are spending upwards of $1,000 a month on sports, arts, or academics, in addition to other child-rearing expenses.

Borden advises parents to regularly reassess their children’s interests and financial feasibility. “At each stage, reassess with your child if it’s something they want to do, if there’s something else they want to explore,” she said.
