Town of Palm Beach United Way launches Hurricane Melissa fund with $50,000 matching gift

The Town of Palm Beach United Way has launched a relief fund to assist Caribbean countries hit hard by Hurricane Melissa.

The Hurricane Melissa Recovery Fund, which was opened Oct. 30 with a $50,000 dollar-for-dollar matching gift from Town of Palm Beach Mayor Danielle Moore, will support rapid-relief operations in communities impacted by the Category 5 storm, which battered Haiti and Jamaica Oct. 28 before moving toward Cuba, the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos.

Catastrophic flash flooding and landslides are expected to continue in parts of the region, the National Hurricane Center said on the day the fund was established. In the hardest-hit areas, damaging winds and heavy flooding destroyed homes and toppled utility poles…
