Palm Beachers are fortunate to live on an island that has not experienced the brunt of a major hurricane in more than two decades, although there have been several close calls.

But to their credit, town residents also understand they have been lucky — and that others in Florida and the Caribbean have not been as fortunate.

It came as no surprise when the Town of Palm Beach United Way established a relief fund to help those affected by Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 monster storm that holds the distinction of being the strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in the Atlantic basin…
