West Palm Beach Welcomes Revival of Historic Sunset Lounge with Grand “Soul in the City” Event

The West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) recently celebrated the finalization of the Sunset Lounge’s renovation, a revered locale in the Historic Northwest District with a jazz-rich heritage that included hosting legends like Count Basie and Louis Armstrong, according to an announcement by the City of West Palm Beach.

The extensive project, which spun into action in 2016 following community discussions and property acquisition in 2018, includes an augmented two-story space that houses a new restaurant, bar, rooftop lounge, and contemporary event amenities that promises to keep the vintage jazz persona alive while stepping into a more contemporary role. Gast Construction Group, Venus Williams’s V Starr handling interior design, as well as Song & Associates, Inc., Cooper Construction, and REG Architects have been crucial in maintaining the building’s historical integrity, their skill merging with appreciation for tradition has breathed life into a once fading symbol of cultural resilience.

Local officials lauded the project’s end with an inaugural celebration called “Soul in the City,” spotlighting Grammy-nominated saxophonist Boney James, solidifying Sunset Lounge’s status as a top-tier destination for live entertainment. “It was incredible to see so many community members join us to celebrate Soul in the City at Sunset Lounge,” Mayor Keith A. James enthused in a statement obtained by the city’s website, “The diversity of the crowd is a testament to what this historic venue has always represented: a place that brings people from every corner of our community together. We are proud of our collaborative efforts with residents and the CRA to revitalize this important cultural hub. The Sunset Lounge has always been a beacon of community, culture, and celebration. Seeing it once again filled with music, joy, and connection is a powerful reminder of why persevering and revitalizing historic spaces like this truly matters.”…
