Delray Beach restaurant manager accused of evading more than $20K in sales tax

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A Delray Beach man is facing a felony charge after state investigators say he collected more than $20,000 in sales tax from customers at his restaurant but never turned the money over to Florida’s Department of Revenue.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed Feb. 26 in Palm Beach County, 62-year-old Francis Anthony Crupi, the manager of Southern Yankees Teammates LLC, doing business as Pizzeria Sophia, is accused of intentionally failing to remit $20,550.25 in sales tax collected between October 2023 and April 2024. The business closed in April 2024.

Investigators say Crupi filed monthly tax returns during the seven months but submitted no payments, despite reporting more than $420,000 in taxable sales. Those filings, according to the affidavit, also listed Crupi’s name and contact information, demonstrating he was aware of the reporting and payment obligations…
