WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Gov. Laura Kelly ceremonially signed a bill last week that was written after Sedgwick County Deputy Sidnee Carter was killed in a DUI crash.
The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said the bill, named Sidnee’s Law, will make Kansas roads safer.
“This important measure ensures that a defendant’s prior DUI convictions are considered when assessing current DUI charges, closing a gap in Kansas law that our office has long advocated to address,” wrote on social media after the signing.

Carter died in October 2022 when Kelvin Burgett hit her patrol car. Court records show he was speeding and under the influence of drugs when the crash happened.
